A story that wonderfully depicts the emotions of an overweight woman with low self-esteem surrounded within the harsh environment of slim and good-looking women. She then decides to lose weight after getting dumped by her lover. The consequences and side-effects are explored further after the ‘achievement’..is it what she really wished for?
Noko is a 20 something living in Japan, working in an office environment. Her coworkers and friends are all skinny, making Noko stand out like a sore thumb. I think, because I am an American, seeing a fat person is pretty common. But maybe, culturally, it’s a huge deal in Japan. For Noko, she is often the butt of fat jokes and snide remarks.
I am not 100% sure if that is how fat people are treated in Japan, so I don’t know how realistic it is in that regards. But I can definitely understand her mind/thought process when it comes to eating food. Even though she is obsese, she has a long term boyfriend who she had been with for years. He seemingly accepts her for who she is and you’ll notice how I said “seemingly”. Whenever Noko has a hard day at work and feels like she should do something about her weight, her boyfriend insists that she doesn’t and gets upset whenever she talks about her body image.
When she discovers that her long time boyfriend is cheating on her, Noko feels that she has totally reached the bottom in her life and vows that she is going to make lifestyle changes and lose weight. Noko even joins a fitness program through a company (kind of like Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc.) But this company is more extreme and really expensive. In fact, they really scream “scam”.
Someone is out to sabotage Noko’s diet and pays the company even more money to NOT help Moko lose weight. So imagine their surprise when Moko loses weight anyway? Not only that but she’s lost weight so fast that her own coworkers did not even recognize her.
But, is losing weight going to solve all of Moko’s problems? Not only that, but how exactly is she losing weight? In the Clothes Called Fat is an interesting manga about self-confidence, self-respect, body image, and eating disorders.
